The town (725 m asl) is located 5 km from the highway Naples-Bari, exit Avellino ovest.

The town was founded in 1178 as an independent country from the Abbey of Montevergine, in an area near Summontel known as the "House of Fontanelle." In a few years the primitive village grew significantly under the dependencies of the Abbey, which received the feudal revenues. Due to a terrible fire in the town was destroyed and rebuilt later in the immediate vicinity of the small church of Santa Maria del Purpose, a short distance from the monastery. Since then, the area where the old village was located was designated as Casale Vecchio. Not far from the new town, the "Casale Nuovo", was then built, almost at the foot of the mountain, a hospital named after S. Thomas and run by the monks. The hospital, which we have written records as early as 1164, was a shelter for the pilgrims going to Montevergine and was built by S. William of Vercelli. With this building is so important, the House began to be called "Casale Hospital Montevergine."

The forests and parks: woods of particular value are those of Montevergine and Cupitelle, 1300 m above sea level, consisting of beech wood rarely mixed with Neapolitan maple and holly. They can be reached through the road that leads to the Sanctuary of Montevergine. In the area of the valley of Toppole we find an extensive forest of chestnut.

The routes: the City of Ospedaletto of Alpinolo, is part of the Partenio Regional Park and can be made excursions of interest. In particular, we recommend the path of ascension to the Sanctuary of Montevergine walk along the old footpath. And ’this a path of great fascination for the history and culture that permeates all the way. Along the way there are the "Cappela the Scalzatoio" and the famous "Madonna’ s Chair", a rock shaped like a big chair where legend has it that Mary is sitting to rest on his way to Montevergine. It seems that anyone who sits down see the rock appropriate to its size. Along the way, the vegetation can sometimes dominate the vast green valley below Avellino and about 2 km from the magnificent sanctuary, the weather is good, you can see a vast and enchanting including Vesuvius, the Gulf of Naples, the Champs Flegrei and Lattari.

La juta: the pilgrimage on foot to the Sanctuary of Montevergine starts on the night of 11 Semptember. the climb, called "la juta" in local dialect, is an ancient tradition. People climb to atone for their sins and to offer their hard work to the madonna on her feast day. Nowadays many people still climb the mountain on foot via a beautiful trail . Every year there’s the tradition to organise a celebration in Ospedaletto d’Alpinolo to commemorate the glories of past great pilgrimages.

Il torrone: a special place among the numerous traditional desserts in Irpinia is reserved for torrone (nougat), called copeto in the local dialect. In Ospedaletto, in Piazza Mercato, a permanent exhibition has been set up where year-round it is possible to buy typical local products: Castagne del prete, ’ntrine and local biscuits known as muzzetti.
